Monday is the five-year anniversary of the day Terrance Williams disappeared — poof — vanishing into thin air. His disappearance, like that of Felipe Santos, has been difficult on his family. The last person known to have seen both Williams and Santos alive is former Collier County sheriff’s Cpl. Steven Calkins, a 17-year veteran who was later fired after he gave inconsistent stories about what happened to Williams during an internal probe. There is no criminal evidence linking Calkins to either disappearance. “This is frustrating for the family, but it’s also very frustrating for the Sheriff’s Office because it’s an open case,” sheriff’s Lt. Mike Fox said.

Q. While I was away for the summer, my air conditioner condenser water drain blocked and the water flooded my unit and ruined my walls and carpet. There is mold on the baseboards, walls and carpeting. I was informed by the board that it was my fault because I did not maintain the drain. No one told me about the maintenance of the drain. I thought this was a common area drain and was the association’s responsibility.

Collier County’s unprecedented purchase of the Pepper Ranch in Immokalee was supposed to be history by New Year’s Day. The electric whir of power saws melded with the staccato tap of hammers on Saturday as about 30 volunteers from Habitat for Humanity of Collier County descended on the Trail Ridge subdivision in East Naples to construct houses for the area’s less fortunate. Volunteer Bill Weisbarth, a retired builder with nearly 60 years of construction experience, said the day was all about giving back to the community. “It’s about giving people a chance, about giving them a helping hand,” the 76-year-old Ohio native said as the bright Southwest Florida sunshine reflected off his oversized sunglasses.
